Radio Horizontal Oddly enough, the Horizontal Party was approached by none of the three old parties to make its contribution to British constitutional history and we have therefore been able to concentrate our resources on the June issue of Horizontal News. But before you feast on the smorgasbord of goodies inside I want you to take a look at that photo to the right there. I know it’s only black and white but it was colour in the original: the sand a blindingly pale ochre, the sea a deep ultramarine, the sky an azure canvas. A dazzling sun threw those long shadows under the beautiful combo……Yes, Bridlington in May. Now go over to the mirror and look yourself in the eye. And repeat after me: “I will go to t’Northern AGM, I will go to t’Northern AGM, I will go………” Alright, you’re under. Right. Off you go and find out inside about the latest from Irbit, how the Stafford show went, what Ural means in Australian, the special guest we may have at t’Northern AGM, and the rallies to be seen at.

Here Comes Summer! Yeeeaaaahhhh! Summer’s here! Break out the suntan lotion. Get down the camping gear. Put away the thermal underwear. Dust off the map of Europe. Look up the ferry timetables. Polish the shades. Get out the lightweight gloves. Buy some flipflops. Blow the muck off the sunvisor. And get out there! We’re at the end of the petrol age, for heaven’s sake. You’ll never get this chance again! But just a minute….. Why has this chap packed his skis, then? And what is he riding? All is revealed below................... Peter, thought these amusing photos might fill a small space in H/News. I took them in Australia. Uralla is on the New England Hwy just north of Tamworth in New South Wales; and the product Ural I saw on a shelf in an outback mini-market convenience type store. Regards,
Gavin Phillips (member no 68/5) (Cheers Gavin — Peter) |

THE
STAFFORD SHOW From our
Man with his Finger on the Pulse Well, we were given a great stand this
year! Very large & in a prominent place on the balcony (all that caviare
bribery paid off). With a fine selection of bikes on display from a 1935
TZH( from Holland—right) to a 2004 Ural there was a variety to be seen &
discussed with the public throughout the show. We even had a DVD player
(supplied by Tony) to show these new fangled moving pictures of club
rallies & info on how Urals are built — which interested a lot of
people. With our membership secretaries (Phil & Gina) on hand, a couple
of new members were inducted & forms given out. There were also a couple
of other Russian bikes on display on other stands such as a 1957 500cc
racing Vostok (of which only 2 others are known) which was on the
Classic Motorcycle Enthusiasts stand. In the
auction was a 1938 PMZ 750cc v-twin which was up for £15,000-£18,000
(just think some Urals might go that high one day!). Outside were trails
demo's & in the arena they were running all manner of race bikes
including a large gathering of Rocket 3s (which was a bit earwax
rattling) & Honda 125,250,500 racers as well Scotts, MVs, Nortons &
Yams. After the show we all retired to the campsite, where we had
erected our own enclave, to discuss all the happenings of the day, with
Tony's barbeque in full swing. Certain people (the politburo know where
you are) took a great liking to my home brew & supped so much that a new
supply has to be brewed for Uttoxeter— plus they renamed it Two Stroke
for to its dark colour! When coldness arrived, everyone piled into
Tony's camper with its awning ( & Iron Maiden playing in the
background). So with good weather, great atmosphere and much joviality
the weekend slipped by.
Bikes on
display were: Steve (Tarka) Thomas 2000 650 roustabout combo (upper
left); Robert Hoffman (Dutch) 1935 TZH 350 (above right); Phil Whitney
1971 Ural M63; Paul Codling Ural M67; Tony Jones 1976 Minsk; Phil & Gina

‘You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down’
Hi all members! This is the final update for the rally we are holding at the VJMC show at Uttoxeter, 3rd & 4th July. The weekend price is confirmed at £15 per person (£18 on the website!) and this includes camping and show entry. There are over 70 clubs booked plus other owners’ club rallies including: Vincent, Goldstar, Jawa- CZ, Armstrong and others. Also large auto-jumble, live bands both nights, late bar and food both nights. There are toilets, washing and shower facilities around the site and a large part of the show is indoors if the weather plays up. So with over 10,000 people attending it’s a good friendly weekend. Also—if you would like to display your bike on the club stand you receive 2 free passes (be quick— limited space). Cheques payable to C Booth. Address: 6,
Curzon Road, St Annes-on-Sea, Lancashire, FY8 3SE or email

OFF THE STRAIGHT AND
NARROW
From
Our Off Road and Up the Pavement Correspondent. Ural motorcycles have
evolved slowly and steadily since their birth in 1941. Major changes do
not happen often, but about every 10 years there are noticeable
technical improvements including 12 volt electrics, better lighting,
improved braking, more power, and reverse gear. During all of this
development the shape and style of the sidecar body has not changed. For off road
competition it is not necessary to have a well-padded, comfortable seat
for the passenger. The “Ural Cross” has multiple handholds as it is
important that the passenger can move around acting as a co-pilot to add
stability and traction when needed in competition events. The adventure
rider considering an around the world trip has slightly different
requirements. The “Ural Cross” has secure lockable storage as well as a
large flat open loading area with plenty of tie down points for awkward
loads. The moveable co-pilot grab bar quickly converts the Ural cross
sidecar into a cargo sidecar.
The “Ural Cross” is
available with or without selectable sidecar drive for European
countries that drive on the right, and single wheel drive for countries
that drive on the left. The “Ural Cross” is equipped with additional
engine protection and a spare wheel on all models. Higher specification
models also include a spade, first aid box and fuel can. For those who already
own a Ural combination the “Ural Cross” sidecar body is available
separately. Simply unbolt the standard body and replace it with the new
“Ural Cross” body. The combination is then ready for your adventure in
any weather. If you want to carry your passengers in more comfort again,
simply swap the sidecar bodies over. More details are
available from your Ural dealer or at
www.ural.cc
